Going on a pilgrimage can be a rewarding, but equally challenging experience.
The Revd Lesley Charlton, Minister of Kingston United Reformed Church, did just that on a recent sabbatical as she wanted to interact with as many different communities as possible, reflecting on what she found, something which a train, bus or car ride could never achieve. Here, she shares her experience from her time on the road to Beith, Scotland.

Around 40 years ago, a very persuasive parent encouraged me to help out at our Church Guide Company, ‘or they might have to close’. So began my life as a Guiding leader, which still continues, now working with a second generation of young women.
Talking about my faith with the Guides is not something I do. There are times we use the church’s sanctuary (the chairs, lecterns and windowsills make excellent hiding places for clues in a treasure hunt!) when I explain how the space is used for worship, but it stops there.
So, how do I share my faith on a regular basis?
Newport Pagnell URC started a weekly time of worship for families attended by two adults and three children. Little did they know that this would blossom into so much more. The Revd Jenny Mills, Minister of Newport Pagnell United Reformed Church, explores how a simple desire to meet the needs of the community led to flourishing discipleship in the area.
After starting this tiny group which needed some good quality family worship, before we knew it we were providing Friday evening meals for women, community meals where we open up the hall to share food and conversation, games and laughter with anyone who wants to come along and a project to knock down our church hall and create a flexible community space in the town centre.
‘Practising this habit is particularly important because it can literally make the world of difference,’ says Andrew Roberts, author of Holy Habits, as he introduces the United Reformed Church’s film, ‘The Holy Habit of Sharing’.
